At Great Feets Podiatry in Redfern, we offer both custom-made and prefabricated orthotic options. Custom orthotics are individually crafted from a detailed assessment of your foot structure and gait. Prefabricated orthotics are medical-grade, ready-made devices that suit many common conditions and can often be provided at your initial appointment.
Not everyone needs orthotics. Our approach is to assess your needs thoroughly before making any recommendation. We only prescribe orthotics when they are likely to provide genuine benefit for your specific condition and lifestyle.

What to expect at your orthotic assessment
Getting orthotics at Great Feets Podiatry starts with a thorough assessment, not a sales pitch. Here is how the process works from your first appointment through to fitting and follow-up.

Biomechanical Assessment
We start by examining your foot structure, joint range of motion, muscle strength, and the way you walk. This helps us understand the root cause of your symptoms, not just the presenting complaint.

Orthotic Prescription
If orthotic therapy is appropriate, your podiatrist will design a prescription based on your specific foot mechanics, condition, footwear preferences, and daily activity requirements.

Fitting and Fabrication
Prefabricated orthotics are often available immediately. Custom orthotics are fabricated from a detailed foot assessment and typically ready within 2 to 3 weeks, depending on the device.

Review and Adjustment
A follow-up appointment is scheduled after fitting to check comfort, function, and fit. Adjustments are made as needed, and we provide guidance on how to gradually break your orthotics in.

Many private health insurance policies with extras cover include a rebate for prescription orthotics. The amount varies depending on your fund and level of cover. We process HICAPS claims on-the-spot so you only pay the gap at the time of your visit. We recommend checking with your fund before your appointment to understand your entitlements.
Most adult custom orthotics last between 3 and 5 years, depending on the materials used and how frequently they are worn. Children’s orthotics generally need replacing every 1 to 2 years as feet grow. We recommend a review every 6 to 12 months to check fit, function, and whether any adjustments are needed.
Most patients need a break-in period of 1 to 2 weeks. We recommend starting with 1 to 2 hours per day and gradually increasing wear time. Some mild discomfort or awareness of the device is normal at first. If you experience significant pain or discomfort, contact us and we will arrange a review to check the fit and make any necessary adjustments.
Orthotics can significantly reduce the pain and functional problems associated with flat feet, but they do not permanently change foot structure in adults. In children, early orthotic intervention alongside targeted exercises can support healthier foot development. Your podiatrist will give you a clear picture of what orthotic therapy can realistically achieve for your specific situation.
