Children's Podiatrist in Sydney
Your Children's Podiatrist
A children’s podiatrist in Sydney assesses, diagnoses, and treats foot and lower limb conditions in growing feet. Children’s feet are still developing, so they need a different approach to adult foot care.
Many foot problems start in childhood but go unnoticed for years. Early assessment helps us catch issues while they are still easy to manage. This often prevents bigger problems later in life.
At Great Feets Podiatry in Redfern, we create a calm, friendly environment for young patients. We take time to explain things in a way children understand, so appointments feel comfortable rather than scary.
For children with gait concerns, we often recommend a biomechanical assessment. This gives us a clear picture of how your child’s feet and legs are functioning as they grow.
What We Treat
Foot and lower limb pain we treat at our Sydney clinic
Foot pain has many possible causes. Below are some of the most common conditions we see and treat at our Redfern foot pain clinic.
Flat Feet
Some degree of flat feet is normal in young children. We assess whether your child's arch development needs support as they grow.
In-Toeing
Also known as pigeon toes. Many children outgrow this naturally, but we assess when treatment may help.
Out-Toeing
When the feet turn outward during walking. We identify the underlying cause and recommend treatment if needed.
Toe-Walking
Persistent walking on the toes past the toddler years can affect balance and posture. We assess and treat this early.
Sever's Disease
Heel pain in active, growing children, usually between ages 8 and 14. We manage this without unnecessary rest from activity.
Ingrown Toenails
Common in children, often linked to poorly fitted shoes or nail cutting technique. We provide gentle, effective treatment.
Growing Pains
Leg and foot discomfort during growth spurts. We help determine whether the cause is mechanical and needs treatment.
Plantar Warts
Common in school-aged children, often picked up at swimming pools or shared change rooms. We treat these effectively.
Footwear Concerns
Children's feet grow quickly, and ill-fitting shoes can cause lasting problems. We provide tailored footwear advice for every age.
Your Visit
What to expect at your child's podiatry appointment
We know visiting a new clinic can feel daunting for kids. Here is what happens when you bring your child to see us.
01
A Friendly Welcome
We take time to put your child at ease before starting any examination. A calm, relaxed child gives us a much more accurate assessment.
02
Talking With You
We ask about your concerns, your child's development, and their activity levels. Your observations as a parent are an important part of the assessment.
03
Gentle Examination
We assess your child's feet, legs, and walking pattern. We explain what we are doing in simple terms so your child understands and feels comfortable.
04
Clear Advice for You
We explain our findings and outline next steps, whether that is reassurance, footwear advice, or a treatment plan tailored to your child.
There is no fixed age. Some parents bring their child in before they start walking if they have noticed something unusual. Others come in once their child starts complaining of pain or is struggling to keep up during activity. If you have any concern about your child’s feet or legs, it is always worth booking an assessment.
Some degree of flat feet is completely normal in young children. Many children develop a more defined arch as they grow. However, if flat feet persist beyond age 5 or 6, or are causing pain, we recommend an assessment to check whether any support or treatment is needed.
Most cases of in-toeing and out-toeing improve naturally as children grow. However, if it causes frequent tripping, leg fatigue, or persists past the age where it usually resolves, it is worth having it assessed. We can determine whether the cause needs treatment or simply time.
Sever’s disease is a common cause of heel pain in active, growing children, usually between the ages of 8 and 14. It happens when the growth plate in the heel becomes irritated, often due to tight calf muscles and high activity levels. The good news is that it can usually be managed well without long periods of rest.
Young children’s feet grow quickly, so we recommend checking shoe size every 8 to 12 weeks up to age 3, then roughly every 4 months until age 5. After that, every 6 months is generally sufficient. Always measure feet while your child is standing, since feet spread under weight.
No. You can book your child directly with Great Feets Podiatry without a GP referral. If your GP has referred your child under a GP Chronic Condition Management Plan, you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate. Please bring your referral letter if this applies to you.
